Basic SAECO, GAGGIA & Solis Espresso Machine Maintenance:
-
SAVE Energy and SAVE your machine. Turn off your SAECO, GAGGIA & Solis espresso machine when not being used for prolonged periods (a couple of hours) - unless your espresso machines has an Energy Savings function. Leaving the espresso machine on will not only waste electricity, but will also reduce the life of seals & electrical components of your espresso machine.
- Descale your machine every 2-3 months.
-
Do not use oily or dark-roast beans! Oils can stick to the brew group valve or screen, in the grinder chamber and in the doser (potential damaging machine components). Costa Rica Cafe Rey coffee beans are non-oily, medium roasted coffee, non-bitter and sweet!
- Do not store coffee in refrigerator or freezer! Roasted coffee being porous, will absorb moisture which will deteriorate the quality of the coffee and the flavor. In addition, moist coffee will cake on the grinder, doser, and brew group (potentially damaging machine components).
-
Clean the brew group frequently. Sediments reduce the efficiency of the grinding chamber and block the passage of water which could damage components such as pumps, brew group or its components.
-
Each day when you turn your machine on, make a fake coffee. If your espresso machine is not programmed to rinse automatically, make an espresso without coffee or make an espresso using the pre-ground cycle (with no coffee).
- After using the cappuccinatore for frothing milk, open the steam valve to let some water flow out. However, if you do not use the cappuccinatore often, when descaling do not forget to open the cappuccinatore to let water flow out from it. Not descaling this part (cappuccinatore) could result in blockage leading to machine failure.
- After using the steam wand for frothing milk, place paper towel or washcloth to cover steam wand and open steam valve to let some water flow out. With moist paper towel or washcloth, clean the steam wand and frother sleeve. If milk has dried on the steam wand, soak the steam wand in hot water to remove any caked-on milk.
- At the end of the day, clean your machine.
- Once every week dismantle the parts of frother to clean and sanitize the parts.

Descaling SAECO, GAGGIA & Solis Espresso Machines:
Limescale is the build up of precipitated minerals from hard water on the internal components of coffee machines. If left untreated, limescale can affect the efficiency of heating elements and clog internal tubing. Limescale also can crack internal components to create water leaks.
Descaling removes limescale from all surfaces
and holes, thus ensuring a perfect operation of
valves, heating controls and other important
parts of the espresso machine. Espresso machines should be descaled at a minimum, every three (3) months. If the water hardness in your area is high (water contains high mineral content), use water softners; otherwise,
descale the machine every two (2) months. Note: Water filters remove odors and chemicals from water but not minerals.
Some of the SAECO, GAGGIA & Solis espresso machines have a programmable control counter that will remind the user to descale the machine. To descale these programmable machines, simply follow the instructions in the User's Manual.
If your SAECO, GAGGIA & Solis espresso machine does not have this programmable feature, just follow these simple steps:
Note: The descaling must be carried out when the machine
components are cold.
Manual Descaling Instructions:
- Turn the machine off.
- Pour the descaler solution
into the water tank (according to the instructions
on the descaler package).
- Place a large container
under the steam/hot water spout.
- Turn the
machine on, press
the hot water and let the descaling solution
in the water tank pour out of the spout for 1 minute
- Turn the machine off for 15 minutes.
- Repeat steps 4 & 5 until the water tank is empty (about 2-3 times).
- Rinse water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh
water.
- Switch the machine on again and let water flow out of the steam/hot water spout
until the water is empty (this step wil rinse away any remaining residues).
- Machine is now ready to use - fill water tank with fresh water.
